Since we have switch from our old spindle design to our new spindle design, there has been some confusion as to which is which. We also would like to clarify which accessories should be paired with which design.
The "old spindle" design is the design that shipped on all of our Kickstarter orders and most of the May preorders shipped after our Kickstarter campaign. This spindle is an NSK NRR-2651. It's distinguishing feature is the quick change tool lever that sticks out of the spindle.
As shipped, the old spindle design can only accept 1/8th inch tooling. It also utilizes plastic shaft collars to assist in setting tool length.

The "new spindle" was released in April of 2016 and will be implemented on all machines ordered after that date. We designed the new spindle to complement the Pocket NC. It uses the same rpm range as the previous version. The main advantage of the new spindle design is that it is built around an ER11 collet which allows for many different sized shanks to be used(including metric). This also makes it easier for users to source tooling wherever they are in the world. The design also uses a tool holder which we designed. The use of multiple tool holders eliminates the need for shaft collars to set tool length offsets. This design uses 3 set screws to hold the tool rather than the quick change lever.
For those who have a machine with the old spindle design that would like to upgrade to the new one, you can purchase that upgrade here. The upgrade includes the new spindle, shipping to and from our shop, and the labor required to change the spindle.
